People ask me this all the time, usually right before they hire someone: what is the actual difference between a life coach and a transformational life coach? It is a fair question. The short answer: a life coach usually helps you reach a goal, while a transformational life coach helps you understand how the experiences you have lived through shaped who you are — and then helps you turn that story into something you can teach. Neither is superior. They are built for different problems.
Here is how I explain it, and what transformational life coaching looks like in my practice.
Life Coach vs. Transformational Life Coach at a Glance
- Traditional life coach: goals, strategy, habits, accountability. Success means the plan got built and executed.
- Transformational life coach: identity, self-image, belief and the meaning attached to defining experiences. Success means you understand why you do what you do, and your story becomes a message you can share.
What Traditional Life Coaching Tends to Focus On
Traditional, goal-focused life coaching centers on what you want and what stands between you and it. The work usually looks like clarifying goals, building a strategy, designing habits, removing friction and holding you accountable to the calendar.
That is real work, and it is often exactly what someone needs. If you know who you are and what you want, and the gap is structure or follow-through, a good goal-focused coach can change your year.
What Transformational Life Coaching Tends to Focus On
Transformational life coaching works one layer down. It deals with identity, self-image, belief, recurring patterns and the meaning a person has attached to their defining experiences.
The question is not only what do you want to do? but who do you believe you are, and does that person believe they are allowed to do it? A plan cannot out-argue a belief. When someone keeps stalling on the same threshold — the launch, the stage, the ask, the book — the obstacle is usually an old conclusion that still gets a vote.
What I Actually Do as a Transformational Life Coach
My work has a clear sequence, and I want to be specific about it.
1. Understand how your experiences shaped you
We start by looking at how the experiences you have lived through molded you into the person you are today — why you do what you do, and why you think the way you think. This is not about reliving the past. It is about understanding it well enough that it stops making decisions for you.
2. Write out your stories
Next, you write your stories down. Putting defining moments on paper is where the lesson inside each one starts to show.
3. Turn those stories into six signature speeches
From those stories, we build six signature speeches — each one centered on a single lesson, with a clear thesis, story and application. If you want the step-by-step, read how to turn your life story into a signature speech.
4. Turn six speeches into six core books
Each signature speech becomes the backbone of a core book. The speech gives you the structure; the book gives you room to go deeper.
5. Use the books as source material
Those six books then become source material you can draw on for audiobooks, online courses, coaching programs or training programs, which can be offered through seminars or webinars. What you build and how far you take it is up to you; my role is to help you organize your experience so it is teachable.

Who May Benefit From Each Approach
If your goal is clear, your self-image supports it, and you mostly need structure and accountability, goal-focused coaching is a sensible fit.
If you keep repeating a pattern you can explain but cannot break, or you are carrying an experience you sense is meant to become a message, a speech or a book, transformational life coaching may serve you better. Plenty of people need both, in that order: identity first, then execution. My coaching includes planning — it just does not start there. The Framework Behind It: The Transformational Story Method™
The Transformational Story Method™ keeps this work structured. We begin with six defining moments—three challenging and three positive—and separate the facts, emotional imprint, and assigned meaning. Repeating patterns become one word or theme, then your Identity Statement, I Am Statement, How-To Statement, and a 3–7 step teachable process, system, or methodology.
Three statements carry most of the weight: your Identity Statement (who you are at the core and why you think and act as you do), your I Am Statement (how you express that identity to the world through your experiences and lessons) and your How-To Statement (the Point A to Point B change you can help someone make). When those agree, people stop reporting what happened to them and start teaching from it. If you want to start with the first one, here is what an identity statement is.
Coaching Is Not Therapy
Coaching is not therapy, counseling, diagnosis, trauma treatment or medical care, and I am not a licensed clinician. My work is forward-focused: identity, belief, clarity, message and action. If someone needs clinical support, the right step is a qualified mental health professional. Results depend on the person and the work they put in; no outcome is guaranteed.

Try This With Your Own Story
Describe one goal you have been postponing. Ask whether the main obstacle is a missing plan, skill, time, resource, or a recurring conclusion about yourself. Write one next action and one question you would ask a prospective coach about how they would help with that obstacle.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a life coach and a transformational life coach?
A traditional life coach usually focuses on goals, strategy, habits and accountability. A transformational life coach works with identity, beliefs and the meaning attached to defining experiences, helping you understand why you think and act the way you do.
What does Gerard Grogans do as a transformational life coach?
Gerard helps people understand how their life experiences shaped them, write out their stories, turn those stories into six signature speeches, develop those speeches into six core books, and use the books as source material for audiobooks, courses, coaching or training programs.
Is transformational life coaching better than traditional coaching?
Neither is better in general. Goal-focused coaching fits someone clear on who they are who needs structure. Transformational coaching fits someone repeating a pattern that strategy alone has not moved, or someone who wants to turn their story into a message.
Do I need to be a speaker or writer already?
No. Most clients start with lived experience, not a finished speech or manuscript. The process is designed to organize your stories step by step.
Is transformational life coaching therapy?
No. Coaching is not therapy, counseling, diagnosis or medical treatment, and Gerard is not a licensed clinician. Anyone needing clinical care should work with a qualified mental health professional.
Can I work with a transformational life coach in Greensboro, NC?
Yes. Gerard coaches in person in and around Greensboro, North Carolina, and online with clients anywhere.
The Takeaway
A life coach moves the plan; a transformational life coach helps move the person holding the plan — and, in my work, helps turn that person’s story into speeches, books and teachable programs. Choose by the obstacle: structure problem, or identity problem.
